Does it drive you bananas to waste money on food that spoils quickly? Bananas are inexpensive and delicious–and a great source of potassium–but not if they go bad before you have the chance to eat them.
You can keep bananas fresh with this simple trick: wrap the stems with plastic wrap. This slows down the ripening process by sealing in ethylene, also known as “the ripening hormone.” Bananas release ethylene at the crown (stem), and wrapping the stem not only slows the ripening of the bananas, but also of nearby fruits!
This particular hack makes a fun experiment for kids learning about science.
