Estimate Remaining Daylight with Your Fingers

Estimate remaining daylight without a cell phone, chart, or even a watch! When you’re camping or hiking and need to know if it’s time to set up your campsite for the night, you can do it with your fingers.

Hold your hands in front of you, fingers closed and parallel with the horizon. For each finger between the horizon and the sun, you have about 15 minutes remaining before the sun goes down. When you have less than an hour’s time, it’s a good idea to locate a spot, build a fire, and hunker down for the night.

This method isn’t foolproof, however. If you’re very close to one of the poles, you should bring along a watch and some charts.
